Over time, human activity has made an impact on the carbon cycle, leading to carbon dioxide building up in the atmosphere faster than it can be soaked up. The European Union (EU) has made a commitment to become climate neutral by 2050, achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
As Latvia’s leading forest management, timber production, logistics and trade company, it is our responsibility to be a positive part of the climate change process given that we directly affect it.
Wood is a widely available renewable natural resource. Trees absorb carbon dioxide that drives global warming. Forests not only capture carbon, but wood products also store it. PATA provides a full range of forest management services, based on the principles of sustainable forestry. As dying or dead trees release some of the stored carbon back into the atmosphere further contributing to climate change, managing existing woodlands is as important as planting new trees.
In our work, we apply the principles of circular economy that help us do both—reduce production-generated waste and recycle wood residue from wood harvesting and sawn timber production. We sell these by-products (woodchips, firewood, shavings) as an alternative to fossil fuels, thus encouraging the use of biomass energy rather that fossil fuels.
A forest ecosystem and its biological diversity constitute the forest’s worth. By investing in forest restoration, we help to protect biodiversity. PATA specialists give preference to local tree species reckoning with a certain wood loss but fostering native ecosystems.
Wood is often chosen as an alternative to such materials as steel, aluminium, concrete, and plastic, whose production require a lot of energy, thus negatively impacting the climate. In the last years, the building industry has seen an increased use of cross-laminated timber (CLT). CLT requires much less energy to produce and results in fewer green-house gas emissions and is seen as an integral part of green building. Also, the material is more easily transportable. We work with a number of CLT producers across Europe, contributing to the promotion of green building.
